Über Archipenko

„Es existierte der traditionelle Glaube, daß die Skulptur da anfing, wo das Material den Raum berührt. Somit verstand man unter Raum eine Art Einrahmung der Masse. Ich experimentierte im Jahre 1912, indem ich von der umgekehrten Idee ausging. Ich erklärte, daß Skulptur da beginnen könne, wo der Raum vom Material umschlossen ist. In solchen Fällen ist es das Material, das zum Rahmen rund um eine Raumform wird.“

„Traditionally there was a belief that sculpture begins where material touches space. Thus space was understood as a kind of frame around the mass. We may change the forms of solid volumes many times, but the actual existence of the outline of the forms, beyond which is the beginning of space, seems to be unavoidable. Ignoring this tradition, I experimented, using the reverse idea and concluded that sculpture may begin where space is encircled by the material. in such cases it is the material that becomes the frame around the area of space, having its own significance.“
